Feeling the Coast

Here we are at the end of 2011 and one of my favorite places to visit is the coast. The Winter sand is cool and the clouds and sky are so inspiring.  I feel lucky to live in Northern California where we have such clean, beautiful beaches and headlands. I wish everyone the best in 2012 and hope we all get a chance to get to the beach or enjoy nature wherever we live.

Clean, Fresh Color

I recently had the privilege of visiting two of my paintings in a very nice home in the Bay Area. Ann Brown, the designer had filled the house with color. My impression when I left was that it was clean and fresh. It was such a nice change to see the beautiful oranges, yellows and blues after looking at all the grey and taupes that are so popular right now. It inspired my to play with color and there's a new collection in my Etsy shop fillled with happy, uplifting color.

December Shows

The Holiday Season is busy and fun. The new Artrageous Gallery in Novato will have it's grand opening celebration this Thursday, December 1st and the presentation is beautiful. I have my abstract landscapes and seascapes in the gallery and am really looking forward to working closer to home.
The Petaluma Art Association's member show is going on until January 8th and Misho Gallery in San Francisco will have an Abstract Art Holiday Show from December 10th - 17th.
I've been playing with floating frames and am so happy with the way the paintings look.
I hope to see you at one of the events.

Moving Forward as Linda Donohue Fine Art

High Point Furniture Market
The last two weeks of October I was in North Carolina for the High Point Furniture Market. It was the most intense show of the last 12 years since I've been going. The first two days were busy with customers wanting to get the last of the Shawna Stoney furniture for their inventories and then the sample buyers. In the end we sold a lot and I had a nice donation to the cancer society for their Discovery Shop. Shawna Stoney is officially out of the wholesale furniture business.
I brought my art to the show not knowing if I would be able to return again. It went better than I could have imagined and I'm so thankful that I'll be back in Spring. I'm grateful to the Accents Beyond Showroom for sharing their space in April and look forward to seeing the friends I've made over the years this time as Linda Donohue Fine Art an artist instead of furniture manufacturer.

Embracing Change

Limelight Horizon 60 x 40 on Etsy
This afternoon I leave for High Point, North Carolina where I have traveled every April and October for the last 12 years. This year will be different as I'm closing my family's furniture business and will be there selling off our samples and what's left in our San Francisco warehouse.
My suitcases are packed with paintings instead of clothes and there is a pallet of larger work waiting for me. This year I will officially show at the market as Linda Donohue Fine Art.
Embracing change is what I'm doing and looking forward to being able to paint full time once the furniture business is closed.
Above is one of the paintings for the show: Limelight Horizon

Three Tower Bridge

Three Tower Bridge on Etsy
Three Tower Bridge on Etsy
In the San Francisco Bay Area there are bridges everywhere. I cross three daily to get from Petaluma to the city and lately they have been in the news with the view from the Golden Gate for Fleet Week and the Bay Bridge Oakland span being replaced. This new painting is inspired by the Golden Gate and the fog that blows through it in the evening when I drive home. You can see Three Tower Bridge on Etsy.

Change of Season

Warm Horizon 16 x 16 on Etsy
Fall has arrived. Today there was mist in the morning and the wind is blowing in our first storm of the season expected later this week. The ground is still warm from the Summer sun and leaves on the vines are turning orange and red. This new painting reminds me of the changes in nature we see around us and the new Fall season ahead.

Life of Water

Life of  Water by  Linda Donohue on Etsy
This new painting is about living in the San Francisco Bay Area. We are surrounded by the pretty bay, estuaries and ocean. I think we live here because we want to be close to the water. This painting called Life of Water is about life here on the Northern California coast.

Resin and Wood

Resin and Wood Art on Etsy

Red and Blue Panel on Etsy
I've admired the art of Rochelle Carr who does huge bold paintings and covers them with an epoxy resin. I decided to try some small works on wood panels and see how they turned out. It was messy work, but fun and I covered everything I could find with the leftovers. These bright little panels are the results.

Salt and Art

Tomales Bay on Etsy Sea and Horse
Painting is a true joy in life that I hope comes through in my art. I've made a new shop on Etsy for all my experimenting with watercolors, acrylic plastics, prints and even a little jewelry.
It's called Sea and Horse.

This is a new watercolor using salt on the wet paper which soaks up the color and makes a great pattern. It's called Tomales Bay after the beautiful San Francisco Bay Area where I live.

You can see my original acrylic paintings on canvas at Linda Donohue Art on Etsy.

Harbor View

Harbor View on Etsy

When I was a kid my parents would send me to spend Summers with my grandparents in Helsingør, Denmark. Times were different then and I was able to explore the pedestrian safe city by myself and walk to the park and near the harbor. We would take the train to Tivoli, ride bikes and play on the beach (watching out for jellyfish of course). This new painting reminds me of those days and the view of the Helsingør harbor.

Thankful for August

Harvest 36 x 36 on Etsy

I am so thankful for August. The ground is warm under bare feet and my garden is full of cucumbers, squash and tomatoes. My children have started the routine of school days and baseball practice and when the weekend comes we all sleep in and appreciate the extra time.  This new August painting is called Harvest and reminds me of what we have to enjoy this month.

Lakeside

Lakeside 36 x 24 on Etsy

We finished our last camping trip for the Summer and enjoyed beautiful Lake Tahoe from Sugar Pine Point State Park. Home of the 1960 Olympic Cross Country Skiing event meant plenty of great bike riding trails in the good weather. The lake was a short bike ride down the hill and if you walk down the trail from the boat house there were rocky beaches where you could spend the day in and out of the water without seeing another person except on the boats passing by. This new painting "Lakeside" is inspired by our trip.... oh yes, and on the last day early in the morning we saw a huge black bear walking through the campsite. It was awesome.

The Beach and the Bay

The middle of Summer is my favorite time of year. Fruits and vegetables are soaking up the sun in the garden and it's the time when our family takes camping trips anywhere near the water. Being outside unplugged from the hustle and bustle of everyday life can clear your mind, uplift your spirits and inspire your creativity. Here are two new paintings from this Summer of the beautiful Sonoma County, CA coastline near where I live.

Ready, Set, SF Etsy!

I just returned from a camping trip to the beautiful Mendocino Coast and it was dreamy. The beach and trees were fantastic. The sun was shining and I had an afternoon nap every day.
Now I'm recharged and ready for our next big event.
The SF Etsy team will have 21 vendors in the Shawna Stoney Showroom on Saturday, July 16th selling all sorts of handmade greatness at the Everything Handmade Summer Show. There is a lot of amazing talent here in the Bay Area.

Interview from Fine Art Finds

http://fineartfinds.com/author/fineartfinds/
For the past few weeks, I’ve been scouring the internet for new and inspiring artists.  These paintings  by Linda Donohue immediately caught my eye. I found her work on Etsy, my favorite place in the whole wide web!  There is an immediate impression that you get from viewing Linda’s work that tells you she is happy when she is making it, whether it is an abstract landscape, or an equestrian study, the underlying theme in her work is joy.
1. How long have you been painting?
I’ve been painting all my life, but just started seriously selling my paintings 1 1/2 years ago.
2. Where do you get most of your inspiration for your work?
My inspiration comes from my surroundings. I live in beautiful Sonoma County and draw ideas from the coast and rolling hills around me. I also ride horses and love to paint them too.
3. What steps did you take to turn making art into a business?
I run my family furniture business and started by painting with my children during the holiday breaks. I put some up on the walls and to my surprise they sold. Then I heard about Etsy and started my shop. The first six months I didn’t know what I was doing and then once I figured it out my sales really began to grow. I’m connected with a couple of galleries in the SF Bay Area that sell my work and through my wholesale furniture line have been able to sell to some of my existing dealers.
4. What advice would you give someone looking to “make it” in the art world?
My advice to someone looking to make it is to follow what inspires you. Usually the paintings that make you feel good and that you love others will love too. Expand in those areas and leave room to experiment as well. Then you will be fresh with new ideas and have reliable ones to give you stability.
5. Do you have a favorite artist who’s work inspires you?
I love to look at the art on Etsy and I have several favorites. I like Linda Monfort, Michelle Daisley Moffitt, and Christina Romeo. I like Michelle Oppenheimer’s watercolors (not on Etsy) and Bernie Weston’s plaster and pigment abstracts.
6. Do you use any other online sources to sell your work besides Etsy?
I am currently signing up for Zatista and hope to be up and running soon. Otherwise it’s through galleries, furniture stores, my own showroom/gallery and Etsy.
7. Do you have any other creative hobbies, or interests?
My other hobbies and interests are that I have a great supportive family, I ride horses and garden and design a line of decorative accent furniture that I wholesale across the country and in Canada and Mexico.
You can view Linda’s full line of work in her Etsy shop: lindadonohue
